This auction will showcase 156 selected works by celebrated masters from Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and other renowned artists, offering visually stunning and profoundly meaningful pieces across various techniques, media, and styles.
Auction Highlights: A Showcase of Masterful Artworks
The auction will feature prominent names such as Affandi, Lee Man Fong, Srihadi Soedarsono, and Basoeki Abdullah. From Affandi's emotive brushstrokes to Basoeki Abdullah's realistic details, the auction presents a diverse array of artistic styles and narratives.
Affandi
Widely recognized as a pioneer of modern Indonesian painting, Affandi's works have been exhibited globally in countries including India, the UK, France, Italy, and Brazil. Since the 1950s, his art has been highly sought after by collectors and institutions worldwide. Affandi developed a distinctive expressionistic technique, painting directly from the tube. This unique approach is evident in two pieces featured in the auction: "Plowing Rice Fields" and "Boats."
In "Boats," Affandi depicts traditional Indonesian fishing boats using a palette of yellow, dark brown, and other deep colors. The painting includes local fishermen and bright green seaweed on the boats, enhancing the scene with vivid details.
Lee Man Fong
Trained in Chinese ink painting and influenced by Dutch Impressionism during his time in the Netherlands (1946-1952), Lee Man Fong, a Chinese-Indonesian artist, blended Eastern and Western artistic styles. By 1937, he was exploring oil painting with a distinctly Eastern approach, and in the 1940s, he seamlessly integrated modern trends with traditional Chinese aesthetics. Lee also served as the court painter for Indonesia's first president, Sukarno.
This auction proudly presents a series of Lee Man Fong's paintings featuring his favorite animal subjects. Known for his detailed portrayals of animals, Lee captured their natural essence, colors, and individual expressions. Works such as "A Pair of Dalmatians," "A Pair of Rabbits," and "Two Goldfish" highlight his meticulous artistry.
Srihadi Soedarsono
A leading figure in modern Indonesian art, Srihadi Soedarsono is celebrated for his mastery of color, composition, and form. A dedicated and senior painter, Srihadi has received numerous awards, including the National Award for Contemporary Art from the Indonesian Government in 1971 and cultural grants from Australia and the Netherlands.
His expertise is evident in three paintings featured in this auction: "The Passion of Legong," "Jukung Boat," and "Salt Seller."
In "The Passion of Legong," Srihadi captures three Legong dancers in energetic motion. His distinctive technique creates a sense of movement, enhanced by a dark purple background contrasting with the dancers' bright costumes.
Basoeki Abdullah
Basoeki Abdullah, a master of realism in Indonesian art, painted numerous prominent figures during his lifetime, including portraits of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew, Brunei's Sultan Hasanah Bolkiah, the Philippines' Ferdinand Marcos, and Indonesia's first presidents, Sukarno and Suharto. He also painted landscapes, showcasing his skill in detail. Notable works in the auction include "Two Pairs of Deer" and "The Lady of Eden."
In "Two Pairs of Deer," the painting centers on four deer by a serene lake, framed by majestic mountains, white clouds, and a bright blue sky. The tranquil lake reflects the landscape, while the surrounding green trees add a naturalistic touch. As a leading realist artist in Indonesia, Basoeki Abdullah's attention to detail brings this painting to life.
