FASHION AND ART FOR THE FUTURE: HOW SMM X EKO NUGROHO INSPIRES YOUNG CREATIVES
Inspiring the Next Generation: How Art and Fashion Shape Youth Perspectives on Sustainability and Creativity
The collaboration between Sejauh Mata Memandang (SMM) and renowned artist Eko Nugroho at The Space, Plaza Indonesia is more than just a fashion exhibition—it’s a gateway to new possibilities for young people. Running from February 20 to April 30, 2025, the exhibition not only showcases 25 unique fashion pieces but also offers a thought-provoking experience that encourages young minds to explore sustainable art, ethical fashion, and social activism.
Bridging Art and Fashion for a Purpose
By merging fashion with contemporary art, the exhibition challenges the younger generation to rethink their role in the creative industry. Featuring handcrafted textiles, eco-conscious materials, and powerful artistic expressions, the showcase reflects themes of environmental responsibility and social justice.
One standout installation, "Ruang Malam," presents three black garments symbolizing injustice, resistance, and resilience. Through this, young visitors are invited to reflect on the power of artistic expression as a tool for change.
“This exhibition is not just about displaying fashion; it’s about storytelling, about inviting people—especially the youth—to engage with critical issues through creativity,” said Chitra Subyakto, Founder and Creative Director of SMM.
Empowering Young Entrepreneurs and Designers
With sustainability at its core, the exhibition highlights the role of young designers in shaping the future of ethical fashion. From limited-edition hand-drawn batik scarves to textiles made from organic palm kernel shells, the event exposes young designers and entrepreneurs to innovative, eco-friendly materials.
Eko Nugroho emphasizes that art and fashion should be part of everyday life, stating, “Sustainability is not a trend; it’s a responsibility. Young creatives must take the lead in designing a better future.”
An Incubator for Future Changemakers
Beyond fashion, the exhibition serves as an interactive learning space. Through pop-up stores, artistic installations, and hands-on discussions, young visitors can connect with industry professionals, gain insights into sustainable practices, and explore career opportunities in the creative sector.
By making art and fashion more accessible, the SMM x Eko Nugroho exhibition becomes more than an event—it’s an inspiration for the next generation of designers, activists, and entrepreneurs to create with purpose and drive meaningful change.
