From less than 10% of total views to one-third of all Netflix watch time non-English content is no longer a niche. And Indonesia is leading the charge in Southeast Asia.

Ten years ago, if you told a Jakarta film producer that Indonesian cinema would one day rival Korean content on Netflix. The same platform that launched Squid Game to global fame, they probably would have laughed politely and changed the subject.

They're not laughing now.

Netflix has confirmed that 35 Indonesian titles made it into the Global Top 10 Non-English chart by January 2026, making Indonesia one of the most significant contributors to what is now a structural shift in how the world watches content.

What is Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English list?
Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English is a weekly ranking of the most-watched non-English-language films and TV series across all 190+ countries where Netflix operates. A title enters the chart based on total hours viewed globally within a given week. For any title to crack this list, it needs genuine international traction  not just domestic popularity. Indonesia has placed 35 titles on this chart up to January 2026, a figure that places it firmly among the top non-English content markets in the world.

Why is non-English content dominating Netflix now?
The numbers tell a quiet story of a seismic change. A decade ago, non-English content made up less than 10% of total Netflix viewing hours globally. By 2025, that figure had grown to over one-third of all viewing on the platform. That's not a trend  that's a structural reset in how audiences relate to language, subtitles, and storytelling.

Part of this shift is driven by the streamer's own bet on local stories. Netflix has invested heavily in Indonesian originals over the past three years, co-producing titles with local studios and talent. The result is content that feels authentic to domestic viewers while carrying enough cinematic quality to travel internationally.

Which Indonesian Netflix films got the most views?
Leading the pack is Abadi Nan Jaya with 22.7 million views, followed by The Most Beautiful Girl in The World at 15.8 million and The Shadow Strays at 15.2 million. The action and drama of The Shadow Strays  with its kinetic, visceral fight sequences  is the kind of film that travels well without needing translation beyond subtitles.

What does this mean for Indonesia's creative industry?
Indonesia is now cited by Netflix as one of the largest contributors to new subscriber growth and total watch hours across ASEAN. That's not just a vanity stat, it means more production budgets, more co-development deals, and more Indonesian stories getting the green light for global distribution.

The surprise factor? Indonesian content has now matched Korean content's share of local Netflix viewing at 30%. Korean content spent years building that position after the global explosion of Parasite and Squid Game. Indonesia got there faster, and without a single Oscar moment to spark it.
