MARK ZUCKERBERG PREDICTS SMART GLASSES WILL OVERTAKE SMARTPHONES AS THE NEXT BIG COMPUTING PLATFORM
Meta CEO Envisions Smart Glasses as the Future of Computing, Predicting a Shift from Smartphones by the 2030s
Smartphones have dominated the modern era, but according to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, this reign may not last forever. He predicts that in the future, smart glasses will surpass smartphones as the primary computing platform.
"I think smart glasses will be the next major computing platform. But every new platform tends not to replace the old one," Zuckerberg explained in a recent interview.
He pointed out how computers have not disappeared despite the rise of smartphones; they are simply used less often. "At some point in the last 10 years, mobile devices became the primary computing platform. We didn't throw away our computers, but even if you have one, you're doing more things on your phone," he elaborated.
Zuckerberg believes that smart glasses will follow a similar trajectory to smartphones. In the future, people will still use smartphones, but they will rely more heavily on smart glasses.
"I think what's going to happen with smart glasses is that we’ll reach a point, maybe sometime in the 2020s or 2030s, where you still have your phone, but it stays in your pocket more because you're doing more things with your glasses that you might currently do on your phone. Glasses will become your primary computing platform," he predicted.
It's no surprise that the 40-year-old entrepreneur holds this view. After all, his company Meta has been heavily investing in the development of augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, aiming to make the technology mainstream and widely adopted.
In a separate interview with The Verge, Zuckerberg noted that traditional glasses are already very popular, which could make the transition to smart glasses more seamless.
"There are already 1 to 2 billion people wearing glasses every day. Just like how everyone switched to smartphones, I think everyone who wears glasses will soon switch to smart glasses in the next decade. I think it will become incredibly valuable, and many people who don't wear glasses today will end up wearing them as well," he concluded.
