As the Festival Harmoni Istiqlal comes to a close, its impact on the younger generation has been undeniable. Running from December 10, 2024, to February 28, 2025, at Masjid Istiqlal, the festival successfully blended history, art, technology, and entrepreneurship, providing an immersive experience for youth to connect with their heritage in innovative ways.

The event, a collaboration between the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of MSMEs, the Istiqlal Mosque Management Board, and the Cultural Advancement Movement of Cipta Kawasan, served as a prelude to the much-anticipated Festival Istiqlal 2025. Over the course of nearly three months, thousands of visitors—many of them students and young professionals—engaged in meaningful cultural exploration.

Reviving History Through Modern Innovation

One of the festival’s highlights was the Galeri Harmoni Istiqlal, an exhibition that showcased Islamic art, history, and the legacy of Imam Bukhari. Through interactive multimedia and virtual reality (VR) experiences, young visitors gained a newfound appreciation for centuries-old traditions in a format that resonated with their digital-native lifestyles.

“The interactive approach made history feel alive and relevant to us,” shared Nadira, a university student attending the event. “Being able to explore Islamic culture through VR was an incredible experience.”

Empowering Young Entrepreneurs

Pasar Harmoni, the festival’s MSME bazaar, proved to be a vital platform for young entrepreneurs. From November 30, 2024, small business owners had the opportunity to showcase their innovative halal culinary creations, artisanal crafts, and cultural merchandise.

For many participants, the festival was a launchpad for their businesses. “Being part of Pasar Harmoni gave my startup much-needed exposure,” said Rizky, a 24-year-old entrepreneur specializing in handmade batik accessories. “I made valuable connections that will help me grow my brand.”

Fostering a Love for Literacy and Intellectual Growth

The festival’s emphasis on literacy through book bazaars and literary discussions, in collaboration with Ngaji Literasi Gramedia, attracted young readers and aspiring writers. These events provided them with direct access to authors and intellectuals who encouraged deeper engagement with literature and cultural discourse.

“With digital content dominating our lives, it’s refreshing to see young people actively participating in book discussions and engaging with ideas beyond social media,” noted author and speaker Dian Mulyana.

A Lasting Legacy for Future Generations

Beyond its exhibitions and bazaars, Festival Harmoni Istiqlal set a precedent for inclusive cultural engagement. Its 1,100-square-meter exhibition space, designed to be accessible to children and individuals with disabilities, created a family-friendly environment that promoted learning through art and technology.

As the festival concludes, its impact lingers in the minds of its young attendees. With an approach that seamlessly integrated tradition with modernity, Festival Harmoni Istiqlal has inspired a new generation to embrace their cultural roots while looking ahead to the future.

The anticipation for Festival Istiqlal 2025 is now stronger than ever, as the youth look forward to yet another opportunity to learn, innovate, and celebrate their heritage.
