EXPLORING THE FEMALE GAZE: FLORA RIKIN'S DIALEKTIKA SHOWCASED AT CEMARA 6 GALERI – TOETI HERATY MUSEUM
Capturing the Essence of Female Gaze: Flora Rikin's DIALEKTIKA Tells A Story About the Complexity of Human Existence Through Photography
Cemara 6 Galeri – Toeti Heraty Museum kicked off its cultural calendar for 2024 with a captivating photography exhibition titled "DIALEKTIKA" by the talented artist Flora Rikin. This exhibition marks the beginning of a new year filled with artistic endeavors and promises a unique perspective on the world through the lens of female gaze.
Flora Rikin's solo exhibition, "DIALEKTIKA," showcases 16 landscape photographs captured between 2014 and 2019. The thought-provoking images feature solitary trees standing amidst vast expanses of snow, inviting viewers into a contemplative exploration of nature. Rikin's work, akin to the watercolor paintings of Timoer Bjerkness in the museum's collection, emphasizes a dialogical approach with the natural world, devoid of objectification. The artist positions her subjects as equals, drawing parallels between the human experience and the interconnectedness of the natural environment.
In the world of contemporary art, photography has emerged as a powerful medium, particularly favored by female artists due to its freedom from historical burdens associated with traditional forms like painting and sculpture. Flora Rikin's "DIALEKTIKA" serves as a gateway for the audience to enter the realm of the female gaze, a subjective and unique perspective that celebrates the individuality of each viewpoint.
Reflecting on the significance of the exhibition, Dr. Inda Citraninda Noerhadi, the Director of Cemara 6 Galeri – Toeti Heraty Museum, expressed her congratulations to Flora Rikin and the entire team behind "DIALEKTIKA." Since its inception, the gallery has remained open to the perspectives of female artists, aiming to inspire the public to create a more environmentally friendly world.
Flora Rikin, the artist behind "DIALEKTIKA," shared her insights, explaining the exhibition as a visual journey capturing the complexities of human personality, internal conflicts, and personal narratives. The exhibition's title draws connections to philosophy's dialectics, emphasizing the role of contradiction and conflict in shaping thoughts and reality.
The curator, Andang Iskandar, delved into the philosophical roots of dialectics, stressing its association with dialogue and conversation. Iskandar highlighted how photography, as a storytelling medium, becomes a vehicle for personal narratives, creating a dialogue between the photographer, their subjects, and the viewers.
The exhibition opened on Saturday, January 13th, 2024, with an event officiated by the esteemed artist Risman Marah. The public is invited to explore "DIALEKTIKA" from January 14th to 27th, 2024, with additional public programs, including an artist and curator talk, a book launch, and discussions on aesthetics and building personal narratives through photography.
Flora Rikin's "DIALEKTIKA" at Cemara 6 Galeri – Toeti Heraty Museum promises to be a journey of introspection and exploration, inviting the audience to engage with the nuances of the female gaze and the complexities of human existence.
