Embracing the local fashion industry has been the theme for at least the past half-decade. According to Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, fashion is one of the backbones of the creative economy industry sector.

"Its contribution is almost 20 percent to the creative economy industry sector," he said in November. Shopping for local fashion brands' items is also easier with the growth of e-commerce in Indonesia.

However, while it can be easily found online, conventional fashion shoppers might still prefer to have their retail therapy in a brick-and-mortar shop. Lucky for you, some retailers have curated the best of the best fashion brands that were crafted by the nation's best.

A Space Amongst Us
Commonly abbreviated as ASAU, A Space Amongst Us is home to five independent designer labels, namely MORAL, S.RW, La Douche Vita, Hi Jack, and Phuture. The concept of an all-white and clean spacious room makes the vibrant and quirky fashion items stand out even more.

The space acts not only as a showroom for the five brands but also as an alternative space to hold work exhibitions, brand/product launches, collection presentations, pop-up events, music showcases, film screenings, and other forms of collaboration.

The Goods Dept.
The Goods Dept. is probably one of the most well-known local brand retailers. Anton Wirjono started The Goods journey with Brightspot Market in 2010 with his sister Cyntia Wirjono and his friend Leonard Theosabrata.

There were only 25 vendors and only 5,000 visitors in that first edition of the Brightspot Market, but now The Goods Dept is a household name for many prestigious malls visitors, such as Plaza Indonesia, Pondok Indah Mall, Pacific Place, Lotte Shopping Avenue, and several other malls. While still organizing the popular Brightspot Market annually, the retailer also has The Goods Cafe to complete the shop and dine experience.

Grammar
Hidden among the classic-style grocery stores on the vintage Cihapit street, Bandung, West Java, Grammar made itself comfortable inside a former restaurant turned attractive souvenir shop.

Established by former members of now-disbanded Norrm Radio and Spatial, Grammars itself sells a number of various products, ranging from stationery, vinyl, artwork, household items, books, dining utensils, garden tools, and ornamental plants. You can also find the quirky handmade-looking vintage fashion items that scream "BANDUNG" in a positively polished way.

Fashionhub
Fashionhub, located in Gandaria City, Jakarta, is a curated shop that offers considerably more affordable local brands, such as Aleza, Jenna & Kaia, Jinzu, and Mine. The retail store is a result of a collaboration between Jakarta Fashion Week's organizer, GCM Group, and Gandaria City.

Fashionhub had a sister store called Fashionlink x #BLCKVNUE which was established by GCM Group in collaboration with Senayan City in September 2016. The store displayed an array of curated local designers that craft not only clothing articles but also home decor and accessories. Some of its renowned residents are Bateeq, Calla The Label, Rani Hatta, KAMI., Sideline, and PVRA. Sadly, Fashionlink x #BLCKVNUE announced its official closure on 5 January 2021, while Fashionhub remains in operation - both offline and online on Lazada.
