Five minutes into Art Jakarta Gardens and you'll be standing between a bronze sculpture floating in a pond and a live band warming up for the evening set — all inside a city park that somehow feels nothing like Jakarta. That's the trick this fair has pulled off twice now, and it's doing it again in 2026.

What is Art Jakarta Gardens ?

Art Jakarta Gardens is an annual contemporary art fair held at Hutan Kota by Plataran, a lush urban park in South Jakarta. The 2026 edition runs from 5 to 10 May, presenting 26 local and Asian galleries across two indoor tents and an outdoor sculpture garden. It's part of the wider Art Jakarta ecosystem — the same organization that ran Art Jakarta Papers, its debut print-art edition, earlier this year.

Tickets went on sale on 21 April 2026 and can be purchased at artjakarta.com.

What can you expect at the fair?

Think of it as three fairs in one. The indoor tents hold gallery booths where you can actually buy works — paintings, photography, mixed media — from some of the most active galleries across Southeast and East Asia. Step outside, and the sculpture garden takes over: large-scale works installed among palm trees and terracotta brick walls, the kind of setting you'll want to photograph before you even read the artist label.

After dark, the fair shifts tone. Past editions featured traditional fire dancers performing between the columns at night, and live bands drawing crowds onto the open-air stage. It's less gallery opening, more cultural evening out.

"The fair will present 26 local and Asian galleries featuring works spread around two indoor tents and throughout an outdoor sculpture garden." — Art Jakarta, official announcement, April 2026

Why Hutan Kota by Plataran?

Most art fairs live in convention halls. Art Jakarta Gardens made a different bet: the venue is the experience. Hutan Kota — literally "city forest" — sits in the middle of Jakarta's business district and feels architecturally distinct, with hand-laid brick walls, tropical canopy, and a network of water features. The 2025 edition proved the concept works. The 2026 edition is building on it without moving anywhere.

How is this different from regular Art Jakarta?

The original Art Jakarta — held at Jakarta Convention Center — is the city's flagship indoor art fair, typically in August. Art Jakarta Gardens is its outdoor, garden-format sibling, designed for a more relaxed pace and a broader public. Where the main fair skews toward serious collectors, Gardens is built for people who like art but also want to eat well and hear good music while they're at it.

Art Jakarta Papers, the debut edition that preceded this announcement, focused entirely on works on paper — a more niche, specialist event. Gardens is the mass-appeal format.

Is it worth going?

If you've never been to an art fair because they always seemed too formal, this is the one to try. The garden setting removes the intimidation factor completely. You can spend three hours there without buying a single thing and still leave with a full evening.

The counterintuitive part: this is one of the cheapest ways to see gallery-quality work from across Asia in one place. Most of what's on view would otherwise require a flight to Singapore, Seoul, or Hong Kong.
