Aquaman is coming back this year to defend his position as the King of Atlantis. Malaysian-born Australian director, producer, screenwriter, and comic book writer James Wan, known primarily for his work in the horror genre, returned to direct his second DC Extended Universe entry, “Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom”.

Wan directed the first iteration of Aquaman in 2018. It featured Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, and many more, successfully grossed worldwide $1.148 billion (Rp 16.467 trillion). It tells the story of Arthur Curry as he journeys to stop the war between the ocean and the human world. With the help of his mother, Queen Atlanna, Arthur fights for justice between the two worlds.

Video teaser and returning cast

Jason Momoa, who reprises his role as Arthur a.k.a Aquaman, joined the first day of production of the sequel on July 17, 2021, along with confirmed returning characters.

The film brings back Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as King Orm a.k.a Ocean Master, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Temuera Morrison as Arthur's father, Thomas. Also returning is Randall Park as the marine biologist Dr. Stephen Shin, who appeared in the post-credit of the first Aquaman movie.

A teaser of the film gave away several sneak peeks of Aquaman's new black costume and revealed new locations that are highly possible to be a part of the much-anticipated Lost Kingdom.

"Second round. New suit. More action," Momoa wrote alongside a photo of himself in the outfit on Instagram.

In another teaser video, Momoa said with a smile that the upcoming flick is an adventure film "much like the first one, but it's better".

Plot and release date

While the plot remains a secret and a surprise for the audience, it is safe to say that Aquaman will face a couple of villains more dangerous than the ones in the first film. Among them will be Black Manta, who is still seeking vengeance for his father's death, Dr. Shin, who seemingly is allied with Black Manta, and King Orm, who is furious because his throne was taken away by Aquaman.

It is clear that although Aquaman already has Mera the water bender on his team, the hero might possibly require more help in his journey,

In the DC Extended Universe's lore, the kingdom of Atlantis was divided into seven after the city fell into the ocean. Due to the events of the first film, Aquaman is now the ruler of (most of) them. The seven kingdom includes the (new) Kingdom of Atlantis, Xebel, Fisherman, Brine, Trench, Deserters, and the mysterious Lost Kingdom. As the film's title implies, fans can expect that Aquaman 2 will heavily focus on Aquaman finding the final kingdom.

"Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 16, 2022. It will be available for streaming via HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical release.
