Google is making strategic moves to enhance the appeal of Chromebooks to businesses with the acquisition of software virtualization company Cameyo. The tech giant aims to deeply integrate virtualized Windows app support into ChromeOS, leveraging Cameyo’s expertise and technology.

The collaboration between Google and Cameyo began last year, focusing on delivering a seamless virtual application experience for legacy Windows desktop apps within ChromeOS. This integration encompassed various features such as local file system integration, virtual apps as progressive web apps, and enhanced clipboard support.

Cameyo's Virtual App Delivery (VAD) integration into ChromeOS caters to businesses seeking to transition away from Windows or incorporate ChromeOS devices. It enables businesses to continue running virtualized Windows apps on ChromeOS without necessitating a full Windows environment, providing a seamless user experience.

Robb Henshaw, Co-founder and CMO of Cameyo, emphasized the acquisition's potential for deeper integration of virtualized apps into ChromeOS. Henshaw stated, "Further integrations will improve not only the end user experience, but also make it even simpler for IT admins to deploy and push those apps out to their users."

Google sees an opportunity to sway more businesses towards ChromeOS as more applications transition to cloud and web-based technologies. Enhanced virtualized app support from Cameyo could be a game-changer, enticing businesses to consider ChromeOS over Windows.

This strategic move aligns with Google's broader efforts to promote Chromebooks in education and business sectors. With Chromebook growth primarily driven by the US education sector, Google aims to expand its market share beyond education, especially in the business realm.

Google's acquisition of Cameyo signifies a significant step towards strengthening ChromeOS's position in the business landscape, offering enhanced capabilities and flexibility for enterprise users.
